The Fine Art of Surrender
The 'fine art of surrender' seems strange to our Western minds, trained as we've been in 'efforting' -- planning, doing, rolling. When you speak of surrender on the Path, just what is it you're surrendering, and surrendering what to who? Or what? Or where? Or when? Or, for that matter, why? I'm sorry - I don't mean to make light of this subject, because I know to a lot of people this is a deadly serious subject. Maybe too serious? Surrender is not subjugation. It is not demeaning nor humiliating. Life is not a battle between God and us, meant to thrash us into towing the line. For decades, this idea of surrender was anathema to my struggling ego. Me, surrender? Forget it! I don't surrender. But then came the time when it was on the agenda, and I had no choice. Things were breaking up around me. Ego was still resistant. What to do? And then one day I was writing in my journal and the thought came, "Think of it as acceptance." Acceptance, not surrender. Not that horrible S-word. I could accept acceptance. When you think of surrender you see it as losing a battle; with acceptance you see a whole different image. You see yourself on the receiving end. It's simply semantics with a twist. With surrender you accept defeat but with acceptance you accept whatever is there. If that sounds like a cop-out, you're still resisting. Live with it for awhile and then come back. What it boils down to is that surrender is acceptance but acceptance sounds nicer to ego. Surrender conjures up the image of a loser. Ego doesn't like that. You'll die before ego surrenders. Don't misunderstand me. I love ego. We've been through a lot together. But ego stopped growing before we hit our eighth birthday. See, it says to us, life is tough but I know how to get us through it. Listen, ego is eight years old and you're trusting your life to an eight year old child. That's the bottom line. So don't resist. Resistance is the only thing that causes pain. Find a way around it. If the agenda calls for surrender, try acceptance.Fine art describes an art form developed primarily for aesthetics and/or concept rather than utility.
